New Year’s weight-loss resolution waning? Why your diet has set you up to fail.

Of 2,000 people surveyed last year, 71 percent said that diet was their top New Year’s resolution.

How many of these people do you think actually followed through? Sadly, not many.

According to the Statistic Brain Research Institute, only 10 percent of people felt they successfully achieved their New Year’s resolution, with 50 percent reporting ‘infrequent success’ and 40 percent failing entirely.

So what’s the issue? Is it just a lack of willpower?

For some, yes. But for most, the real reason is that dieting is a nearly impossible task from the start. What most people don’t realize is that mainstream diets actually set you up to fail.

This is backed up both by science and experience. I’ve seen this first hand. For twenty years I tried and failed to follow mainstream diets, my weight didn’t budge and my self-esteem fell even lower with each attempt.

Everything changed when I learned how the body really works. Once I implemented this new information into my life, ‘dieting’ suddenly became easy. Three years later, it’s still part of my regular lifestyle.

Your diet prevents fat loss
If you were to sum up the average mainstream diet in a single line, what would it be?

Cut calories, avoid fat, and eat more whole grains.

This kind of makes sense on paper: fewer calories = weight loss, eat less fat = be less fat. But the truth is, when you cross a low-fat, high-carb diet with calorie restriction, you create a combination that makes your dieting not only miserable, but guaranteed to prevent you from burning fat and losing weight.

You see, when your body is geared to burning carbs for energy, it only knows how to do that. So reducing your calorie intake puts your body into starvation mode and naturally reduces your metabolism to compensate. This means that not only are you hungry all the time, but you’re actually burning fewer calories as well. Double fail.

Worst of all, this does nothing to your fat stores, because your body isn’t geared to use them. So once your body runs out of carbs, it screams at you to feed it more and you feel a major drop in energy until you do.

Sounds painful doesn’t it?

But, if you switch to a low-carb, high-fat (keto) diet, you can shift your body away from using glucose for energy and to start using your fat stores instead.

Only when your body is ‘in keto’ and burning fat does calorie restriction have a chance to work. Because when you eat fewer calories, once your body uses them up it can smoothly shift to burning all that fat you’ve stored up over your lifetime.

As an added bonus, it’s much harder to overeat on keto because fats make you feel fuller than carbohydrates and your body responds to the two very differently. While you can easily down a dozen donuts and still crave more, you can’t do that with a dozen steaks.

Hard to overeat, Compare this to the mainstream diet. Intense hunger and no fat loss. With those kinds of results, no wonder you so readily throw in the towel.

The hunger is too great
If you’ve ever struggled with hunger on a diet, you know how rough that can get. It makes you cranky, unfocused, and downright depressed. And if you break and sneak a snack, you hate yourself for it.

But before you feel like a complete failure, know that hunger is a really powerful thing.

Hunger has led people to do some pretty drastic things throughout history—even so far as eating their friends and family when it got to be too much. I know that may sound pretty extreme, but it shows you how strong the power of hunger can be.

That’s why combating hunger is so crucial for success on dieting.

When you go keto, hunger becomes much less of an issue for two key reasons. One, the fat you’re eating keeps you fuller for longer. No more blood sugar spikes and crashes; you’re on a more stable, calmer trajectory. Two, when your body can draw on your fat reserves for energy, it has a constant, steady supply.

This also helps you snack less, as you feel less need to ‘top up.’ This is also a great segue to intermittent fasting if you really want to take your weight loss to the next level. The food is boring
The next most common reason that you are likely to quit your already failing diet, is that the food is plain boring.

Just picture the stereotypical ‘diet food’ you’re supposed to eat when you’re trying to lose weight. It’s a cold, soggy plate of misery. Or as my uncle always called it—rabbit food. Plain salad with reduced-fat salad dressing or boiled chicken with no salt.

But that’s just not living! In the immortal words of Sophia Loren, “I’d rather eat pasta and drink wine than be a size 0.”

The reality is, eating right and managing your relationship with food doesn’t need to be painful. Instead, the keto diet allows you to eat some of the most delicious foods on the planet. All those things you’ve not been ‘allowed’ to touch for years.

One of the basics of the keto diet, as part of turning your body into a fat burning machine, is to consume more fat.

Fat is tasty. That’s a fact.

On the keto diet, you can cook with oil, you can eat the skin on the chicken, you can add salt, you can add cheese, and you can even use heavy cream! That’s not all you eat. It’s still important to eat your vegetables, but at least they’ll taste really good.

Despite what you’ve been told your whole life, you do NOT have to deprive yourself of texture, flavor, and variety in order to lose weight.

At the end of the day, it’s still up to you whether or not you fulfill your New Year’s resolutions.

But it’s clear that your chances of success are far higher when you’re not fighting a losing battle.
